About Martha

My practice

My choreographic practice is often rooted in the intersection of contemporary dance and visual arts. I have a strong interest in how choreography can converse with music, voice and score. My practice continues to evolve through independent creations and collaborative contexts, reflecting my sustained interest in the complexities of the lives experience in all its forms. My work is supported by forms of documentation, mainly visual archiving and writing practices, with an interest in leaving physical traces of art in all its forms, striking for a multifaceted creative process and an interest in multimedia approaches to art making.

My performance experience

I am passionate about movement and am keen to integrate my rigours technical training into my creative works. Championing the bodies ability to move in any capacity is something that is at the chore of my practice. My formal dance training began with a heavy focus in Ballet, eventually moving to explore contemporary techniques such as Graham, Cunningham, Gaga and release. I have most recently performed in ‘Choreomania’ by Mette Ingvartsen, ‘Rosas Danst Rosas’ by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Fracta Festival and ‘Birdwatching 4X4 by Benjamin Vandewalle at Dansand.

Training

I have graduated from P.A.R.T.S (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios), Brussels, as part of Generation XIV. Here, my practice was shaped by intensive physical research, compositional inquiry and a deep engagement with contemporary performance making. My formative training took place across Wales and the UK through local grassroots provisions and later, Rambert Pre-Vocational, Ballet Cymru Associates, National Dance Company of Wales Associates, Rubicon Dance and National Youth Dance Wales.

The Leo Collective

Alongside my own performance work and creative practice, I am a founding member of The Leo Collective, an international trio of female artists working between Brussels, Prague, Wales and Lithuania. Our artistic voices are contrasting, offering scope for experimental modes of collaboration. We are curious to hone a multidisciplinary, horizontal approach to creative practices, without limitations, accentuating our want for radical experimentation and an embracing of the unexpected.
